Sligo Chamber has announced that Seamus Farrell, Managing Director of S.F. Engineering is the Business Person of the Year 2008. Sponsored by Jacobs Creek, the Business Person of the Year Award is Sligo Chambers salute to a business person for their contribution to Sligos economic development.

SF Engineering, which Seamus Farrell started in 1982, provides customised process and packaging solutions to the majority of blue chip food companies in Ireland & Europe. SF is the biggest privately owned solutions provider in Ireland and the UK. Approximately 80% of all food products of Irish origin on supermarket shelves have been manufactured using solutions provided by SF Engineering.

With a significant presence in Ireland, with state of the art factory & headquarters in Grange, Co Sligo and a second manufacturing plant in Cambridge, UK. More than 60% of SF manufactured product is for export markets which include the UK, Europe and the Middle East. SF employs some 70 personnel across the 2 factories & resources include full design & project management along with manufacturing capacity in Ireland & the UK.

Today, SF Engineering has a 22,500-sq-ft manufacturing plant in Grange, Co Sligo, which includes a modern sheet metal fabrication and machining facility with state-of-the-art mechanical design software. There is also a process demonstration area. The company has developed as well as grown through the years.

Fifteen years ago, Mr Farrell realised that the general engineering business was declining and decided that in order to survive the firm needed to focus on being a "solutions provider" rather than solely an engineering company. "As the world population was growing, we knew the demand for food-related engineering products would be a niche market that would give us the growth and stability to move forward," he explained. That vision has paid off and export sales have grown increasingly important.

President of Sligo Chamber, Kevin Quinn Jnr is delighted that Seamus Farrell has been named Sligo Chamber Business Person of the Year 2008. "Seamus has built S.F. Engineering into a very profitable business by exploiting his niche to its full potential. It is a good example of what every small Sligo firm should be aiming for," he said.

Sligo Chamber will present the Business Person Award to Mr. Farrell at their Annual Dinner Dance next Friday 16th October in The Radisson SAS Hotel & Spa. Sligo Chamber and Jacobs Creek are delighted to welcome George Hook, Sportsman, Broadcaster and Author, as the guest speaker for the evening.
